Behaviour and Belonging at Stanhope

Behaviour & Belonging at Stanhope

The Stanhope Way: Where Every Child Shines

At Stanhope, we believe that every child has the potential to be a Stanhope Star - and part of that journey begins with learning how to behave positively, responsibly, and respectfully. Our behaviour and belonging culture is built on care, consistency and high expectations. We don’t just manage behaviour—we teach it, model it and celebrate it.

We want our children to be proud of themselves, proud of each other, and proud of their school. That pride shines through in the way they move, speak, learn, and interact - with warmth, with confidence, and with kindness.

The Stanhope Way

At the heart of our school is The Stanhope Way - our shared language for how we behave, learn, and belong. It’s simple, clear, and powerful.

We use key phrases that every child understands and lives by:

  • Fantastic Walking

  • Fantastic Listening

  • Fantastic Sitting

  • Fantastic Manners

These aren’t just words—they’re habits we practise every day. They set the tone for calm, focused learning environments and respectful, inclusive play.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – adapted from Aristotle

Our Behaviour Curriculum

We believe in creating a culture of fantastic behaviour—for learning, for community, and for life. Our behaviour curriculum is built on the values of respect, responsibility, kindness, and tolerance.

We teach children how to:

  • Take responsibility for their choices

  • Reflect on their actions

  • Show empathy and gratitude

  • Celebrate difference and build inclusive friendships

  • Contribute positively to school life and the wider world

As children practise these behaviours, they become lifelong habits that shape not only how they feel about themselves - but how they are seen by others.

Celebrating Positive Choices

We believe in catching children doing the right thing. We celebrate positive behaviour at every level:

In the Classroom

  • Verbal praise

  • Class Dojo 100 points (leading to class prizes)

  • Work displayed on classroom and corridor recognition boards

  • Stanhope Star certificates in our Celebration Assembly

Wider Recognition

  • Headteacher Phone Call

  • Postcard home

  • Weekly Celebration Assemblies

Creating a Culture of Belonging

At Stanhope, belonging matters. Every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated. Through our values-led curriculum, our inclusive practices, and the support of families and staff, we work hard to create a place where every child feels they belong.

We teach children to embrace differences and champion kindness. Through assemblies, PSHE lessons, and special events, we help children understand what it means to live with empathy, integrity and fairness.

Anti-Bullying and Inclusion

We do not tolerate bullying at Stanhope in any form. Every adult in our school is committed to keeping children safe, supported and respected. Our approach is proactive and restorative - we listen, we act, and we support all children involved.

Through our curriculum and daily practice, we:

  • Explore protected characteristics

  • Celebrate diversity

  • Teach children how to be upstanders, not bystanders

  • Show what positive, healthy friendships look and feel like

  • Encourage honest, kind communication

If bullying is ever suspected, it is addressed quickly, seriously, and with care—following our Anti-Bullying Policy and in partnership with families.

Together, We Shine

At Stanhope, we believe that behaviour is everyone’s responsibility - from the youngest pupil to every member of staff. By working together, modelling high expectations, and living the Stanhope Way each day, we help every child become the very best version of themselves.

Because when we walk fantastically, listen fantastically, and treat each other with respect…
We don’t just learn well. We shine.
